Grapevine Studies is a unique Bible study program for all ages. Their slogan is “Stick-figuring through the Bible” because in all their studies, students do stick figure drawings to help them retain the information. Grapevine currently offers studies covering The Old Testament, The New Testament, Esther, Biblical Feasts and Holy Days, and The Birth of Christ. Many of their studies have materials available for six different levels ranging from preschool through adult. Several of the studies are designed to be used for multiple ages of students together.

Since I am always eager to combine my students whenever possible, I chose Old Testament Basics, a resource to use for multiple ages, to review. I received the Teacher’s Book as well as the Student Book in the e-book format.

The Old Testament Basics study is in a catechism format and contains 225 questions and answers. The Teacher’s Book has, in addition to each question, the corresponding answer, scripture reference, and a suggested stick figure drawing. The Student pages have only the questions with space to write the answer and draw the stick figure.

Old Testament Basics begins with several questions about the Bible and God, then progresses through the Old Testament from Creation to Nehemiah in chronological order. Among the question are many of the facts that I want my children to memorize like the Days of Creation, the 10 Plagues, the 10 Commandments, the number of Kings of Israel, and the number of Kings of Judah.

Here are some examples of my children’s work. You can see from the pictures the format of the student pages, as well as the variety in my children’s drawings. I told them that they did not have to use the suggested stick figure, but could modify it. The author also recommends allowing the students to be creative with their drawings to enhance their retention.

You can see that the multi-age study enabled me to present the lesson to all my children at the same time, but also allowed them to work at their own level on the student pages. I liked the flexibility of this study. It can easily be used alongside any other study of the Old Testament as a supplement, or as a stand-alone Bible curriculum.
