As a member of the TOS Homeschool Crew, I received products from Math Tutor DVD to review last year. When I saw that I was on the list again this year, I didn’t know what to expect. I did know that I would be receiving a different product, but I had no idea just how different it would be.
I received the Young Minds Numbers and Counting DVD to review. As with many of the review products, I knew exactly which of my children would be helping me with this review. This is definitely for my 3 year old daughter. She sat absolutely glued to the TV the first time I let her watch it. (I’m not totally sure that’s a good thing. However, my high ideals of extremely limited screen time for little ones have gradually eroded with each subsequent child.)
The DVD consists of vivid pictures and video clips of a wide variety of animals, flowers, and other objects. The visual is accompanied by beautiful classical music. In addition, children narrate the DVD by counting the various objects. As the objects are counted, numbers appear on the screen. Often an additional fact about the item being counted is also mentioned. For example, when counting animals, the sound the animal makes is also included. One nice thing was that the included sounds were actual sounds from the animals or objects, not a person imitating the sounds.
My daughter and I both approve of this DVD. Unlike many preschool videos, I don’t find this one annoying. Maybe it’s the classical music. It has definitely reinforced her counting abilities and aided in teaching her to recognize numerals.
