I like to make a lot of things from scratch.  I think it’s both healthier and more economical to cook that way. (Not to mention it usually tastes better).  I definitely don’t make everything from scratch though.  For instance, I do buy bread from the bakery thrift store.  I bake bread for dinner, but I haven’t had the desire yet to make time to bake bread for all our sandwiches.  I also buy an occasional Stouffer’s lasagna.  Though it is a little too salty for our tastes, if I find a sale I can buy it for less than I can make it, plus it’s so much easier. I do understand that every family does not have the luxury of having a full-time homemaker in the family.  Obviously, people with less time might need to purchase more convenience food.  It does beat McDonald’s at least. (I think…)

But I cannot believe some of the ridiculous “convenience” foods that are on the market now.  I was cutting out coupons and found a special coupon for pre-measured brown sugar!  OK, I can’t imagine anyone who is baking from scratch, thinking that buying 1/4 cup portions of brown sugar is going to save them that much time.  How long does it take to measure brown sugar?  Give me a break!  (A little tip for measuring brown sugar is to stick the measuring cup in the bag, scoop the sugar into the cup and pack it down with your hand through the bag. Just thought I’d throw that in for free!) If you’re that pressed for time, just use a mix or buy cookies from the bakery!

The other product that I think is absolutely ridiculous is Motts for Tots apple juice.  They’re marketing it as having 40% less sugar with no artificial sweeteners.  Guess why it has 40% less sugar?  Have they genetically engineered apples that have 40% less sugar? Of course not. It’s because they added water to it. (My guess is 40% water).  Why would someone pay extra for juice with all that water added, when they can just add water to the cup at home?

What will they think of next?  Pre-made peanut butter and jelly?  Oh yeah, they’ve already got that too.

  1. I so agree. We try to make most stuff at home too. It is so much cheaper and healthier. Whe I pronounce the words on the packaging it is time to skip that pre made thing.

  2. I totally agree with you on the brown sugar, although I don't know that I've seen it yet. I am amazed at all the other "convenience" foods that are popping up around the meat section of Walmart. Basically throw everything into a pot and you have dinner. Um, throw real food into a crockpot in the morning and you have real food at dinner, for a lot less money. I'll get off my soapbox. LOL
